Key information

Research tracks: Track 1 – Show us the public money
Countries: Sudan, Tunisia, Senegal, Zimbabwe and Kenya
Researchers: Marie-Simone Kadurira and Yasmina Benslimane

Summary

This research aims to address the critical funding challenges faced by Young Feminist Organizations (YFO) in Africa by exploring alternative public funding mechanisms. By enhancing financial accessibility and sustainability, YFOs can continue their vital work in promoting gender equality and preventing gender-based violence. The proposed study will provide valuable insights and practical solutions to support YFOs and foster a more equitable distribution of resources.

The urgency of addressing these funding gaps and structural barriers cannot be overstated. Ensuring the financial sustainability of YFOs is essential for advancing gender equality and achieving meaningful social change in Africa. This research represents a crucial step towards achieving these goals.

Multiple water streams symbolizing philanthropic giving, multilateral funding and bilateral funding lead to a little lake. This water allows the nature and community around the lake to thrive. There's a fourth funding stream that is yet to be discovered.
To showcase the research projects in a creative way, a unique cartoon has been designed for each. This research proposal is illustrated by Amany Al-Ali.

Advocacy Asks

This research’s key learning questions are:

  • What alternative funding flows to Official Development Assistance (ODA) can be tapped into at local, national, regional, and global levels to support feminist organizations and movements in Africa?
  • How can bilateral and multilateral funding become more sustainable and relevant to feminist communities in Africa?
  • What lessons can be learned from alternative funding streams utilized by young feminists in a bid to improve funding flows and the overall funding landscape?

Methodology

The study will use a combination of surveys, interviews, and focus groups to collect primary data from YFOs, funders, and policy-makers in Africa. Secondary data will be gathered through a review of existing literature, reports, and case studies on funding mechanisms and feminist financing.
